Carr Creek Cattle Company: A Testament to Tradition and Innovation and the Way of the West
Living in Colorado with access to locally raised beef is a culinary delight not available to all. With its vast expanses of fertile land and a proud tradition of ranching, Colorado offers residents the opportunity to enjoy some of the finest beef in the country, straight from the source! From tender cuts of steak to juicy burgers, living in Colorado means savoring the taste of the West with every bite.
In the picturesque landscape and diverse terrain of Western Colorado you’ll find Carr Creek Cattle Company which stands as a beacon of tradition and innovation in the realm of ranching. At the helm is McCade McDonald, a second-generation rancher, outdoorsman and real estate broker, whose passion for agriculture and construction has shaped both his business and his lifestyle.
Carr Creek Cattle Company, named for the lazy creek that runs for 3 miles throughout part of the ranch, operates as a cow-calf operation based in Fruita, CO (Mesa County) and Garfield County – spanning 5,000 acres total. At the heart of Carr Creek Cattle Company is a dedication to craftsmanship and care. McCade personally oversees the production of feed for his cattle, ensuring that every aspect of the process reflects his commitment to quality and sustainability. With a keen understanding of breeding, McCade raises a predominantly SimAngus herd, harnessing the strengths of both breeds to create animals that are robust and fast-growing. McCade keeps a couple registered Angus cows for his personal collection, along with several horses, dogs, cats and the like. His favorite horse, Pepper, is a near constant companion – a hard working horse with a stubborn streak and a sense of humor.
Each season, McCade orchestrates the movement of his cattle from his farm in Fruita (approx. 4,500 ft) to higher elevations, maxing out at around 9,000 ft at the top of the Bookcliffs, where pastures and cooler summers await. This strategic migration not only ensures the well-being of the animals but also maximizes the quality of the feed, resulting in premium grass-fed, grain-finished beef.
If you are looking for some tasty, locally raised meat, McCade sells his beef on a seasonal basis. The cows are harvested in the fall and dry aged for a premium product. They are available by the half or whole cow. There is a potential for custom cuts/orders with a call in to McCade. Pricing and available cuts can be found on his price list.
McCade's journey into ranching began in his childhood growing up on the family ranch. Later, he attended Colorado Mesa University, where he pursued studies in agriculture and construction. But McCade's education doesn't end there. In 2022, he took on the challenge of building a barndominium on his ranch in Fruita, serving as the general contractor and gaining invaluable hands-on experience in construction. From working with subcontractors to navigating permits and design, McCade's foray into construction exemplifies his willingness to adapt and learn in pursuit of excellence and has given him great experience to assist his clients.
Beyond the ranch, McCade's passion for rural living extends to his work in real estate, where he helps others navigate the complexities of land ownership and management. Drawing on his upbringing in farming and ranching, McCade offers invaluable expertise in everything from water rights to easements, stocking rights and care of the land to create a premier ranching property while guiding clients toward their real estate goals with confidence and integrity.
For McCade, ranching isn't just a profession; it's a way of life deeply ingrained in his being. His story is one of resilience, ingenuity, and a profound connection to the land. As he continues to shepherd his cattle and his community forward, McCade McDonald stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the new Colorado cowboy.
